My favorite Beatles, in order are: First George then Ringo with those other guys tying for last place. You may disagree…talk amongst yourselves…but you’d be wrong.
Most folks have George and Ringo holding up the rear of the Beatles caravan, but not me. I appreciate George for his spirituality and his insights, and I love Ringo for his “relentless positivity”.
There is something about “relentless positivity” that can be irritating. You know, that person in your life who when facing or having just experienced a traumatic event finds the one possible silver lining – even if its absurd – and throws it into the mix. There is a time and place for everything, for sure, and “relentless positivity” is not an exception.
However, as far as having “relentless positivity” as a character-defining trait, you could have it a lot worse. Einstein was smart, Rosa Parks was brave and Ringo is “relentlessly positive”.
I thought about Ringo a lot when I (finally) watched Ted Lasso last fall. The Ted character also was defined by “relentless positivity”, coupled with a vulnerability that made him very human.
And to think, at the age of 84, Ringo is setting out to tour again with his All-Star band this summer. I’m guessing with 21 albums to his name (plus another 12 with the Beatles), he’s not doing it for the money. What makes this even more exceptional is that when it comes to touring rock bands, it’s normally the drummer who bows out of touring first. Drumming is hard work and it’s hard on your body.
Ringo and Ted. Not a bad pair to hold as role models in your life.
PS…Ringo’s latest album which came out this week is a classic country album. Not my cup of tea, on the whole, but there are some good songs, especially “Look Up”. You can check it out on YouTube here.
