Tim was born in San Diego, California to George and Daisy Lawrence in 1943. The family moved to Edinburg, Texas when he was three. Music was a big part of Tim’s life from early childhood. He grew up singing harmony with his parents, big brother, Jon Dee, and little sister, Alma at church services, camps, and on road trips. He made All State Choir both his junior and senior years of high school and made a name for himself performing at multiple venues in the Rio Grande Valley, including regular appearances on a local TV show.
After graduating from high school, he attended Texas A&I on a full music scholarship, then transferred to Pan American College where he graduated in 1966. Tim was a natural entertainer and continued to perform throughout college in musicals, choirs, and other singing groups.
After college, Tim taught junior high history and music in Mercedes, Texas before following his family to Houston in 1969. Tim met Mindy at their apartment complex in January of 1973. Three months later, he proposed, and three months after that, they were married.
In 1974, Tim took a job with Zapata Offshore and he and Mindy moved to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. They moved back to Houston in 1977. In the 1980’s and 90’s, Tim designed, sold, and installed communications systems for companies in both the US and Mexico. He was an entrepreneur who owned and operated various businesses, and he had a passion for his community. Tim served on the board of Cinco’s master MUD for over 30 years.
Tim was an active member of Emerson Unitarian Church, which he joined with Mindy in 1980. He sang in the choir, sponsored the LRY, served on the board, and directed the Youth Follies. Tim loved to cook and won several competitions with his “Big City Boys” fajita team. He always loved working on cars… and driving fast. He loved flying, playing golf, hunting, fishing, and camping. He loved to sing and play guitar. No matter what he did, Tim was all in. More than anything, Tim loved his family, both those by blood and those chosen. Tim lived without regret, convinced that any change in the paths chosen would not have led to the family, friendships, and life he revered.
Tim is survived by his wife Mindy, daughter Sarah, son-in-law Jeremy, grandson Dylan, and sister Alma.
A Memorial Service for Tim Lawrence was held on Saturday, November 12, 2022.
