This session will introduce the historical, religious, and spiritual aspects of Eastern cultures and make the point that it is more difficult to separate religious dogma and practice from spirituality and local culture in the East than in the West. Thus, the subject is best considered as “an intellectual tradition.”
A general overview will be given on these subjects: (1) the Vedas and Upanishads,
(2) Hinduism, (3) the Hindu epics, (4) the Bhagavad Gita, (5) Jainism, and (6) Zarathustra and Mani – the dualistic religions. Although some details will be addressed concerning the basic beliefs and doctrines in those religions, the focus will be on the historical narrative and its effect on culture in the East.
