SUMMARY:Three Visions of a Democratic Society: Capitalism\, Social Democracy\, and Democratic Socialism - Gary Putnam
DESCRIPTION:How should a democratic society balance freedom\, equality\, and the common good? Capitalism\, social democracy\, and democratic socialism each offer a different vision of how a democratic society should answer these enduring questions. Through the lens of our UU Principles\, we’ll explore how each tradition aligns with the values we affirm. Rather than asking which vision is “right\,” our goal is to deepen understanding through thoughtful\, respectful discussion.\n\nPresented by Gary Putnam\n\nJoin us for Adult Religious Education (ARE) every Sunday at 9:30 AM! \nClick here on Sunday to join our online discussion!: https://emersonhouston.org/AdultLearners \nWould you like to learn more about ARE? SUMMARY:The Pursuit of Power – Part 2: Brave New World - Mike Condit
DESCRIPTION:We will continue our discussion of the pursuit of power in human history by examining “Brave New World”  by Aldous Huxley\, a novel that depicts a future authoritarian society based on rigid community\, identity\, and stability. We will also address Huxley’s subsequent work “Brave New World Revisited”\, a commentary on topics in the earlier book. We will use it as a basis for group discussion concerning how these ideas relate to our country and the wider world today. \n Presented by Mike Condit\nJoin us for Adult Religious Education (ARE) every Sunday at 9:30 AM! \nClick here on Sunday to join our online discussion!: https://emersonhouston.org/AdultLearners \nWould you like to learn more about ARE? SUMMARY:The Pursuit of Power - Part 1:  Lessons from Sophocles and Shakespeare - Mike Condit
DESCRIPTION:“The Pursuit of Power – Part 1:  Lessons from Sophocles and Shakespeare” \nThe pursuit of power by individuals or societies has been one of the most distinctive characteristics of human history. Other concepts have contributed to that “universal goal” – pride\, hubris\, vengeance\, concern for reputation\, and even love. We will look at how the quest for power has been depicted in literature. This first session will examine Sophocles’ Ajax and Shakespeare’s Macbeth. \nPresented by Mike Condit \nJoin us for Adult Religious Education (ARE) every Sunday at 9:30 AM! \nClick here on Sunday to join our online discussion!: https://emersonhouston.org/AdultLearners \nWould you like to learn more about ARE? SUMMARY:Jane Austen: Pioneer Novelist and Feminist - Mike Condit
DESCRIPTION:Jane Austen is often seen as the first great English female novelist. In her 6 major novels\, she not only developed interesting characters and situations in the English society of her time\, but she also addressed issues fundamental to the place of women in that society. She thus contributed to later feminist movements that advanced the roles of women. On the 250th anniversary of her birth\, there is much to learn about sociological and moral aspects of society by studying Jane Austen. This will be a review of her work and legacy.  \nJoin us for Adult Religious Education (ARE) every Sunday at 9:30 AM! \nClick here on Sunday to join our online discussion!: https://emersonhouston.org/AdultLearners \nWould you like to learn more about ARE?
